🌱🎣 Spring Walleye – What You Need to Know! 🐟
As the ice melts and the water warms up, walleye enter one of their most active seasons—spring! This is the prime time for anglers to target these fish as they prepare for spawning and feeding frenzies. Here’s what makes spring fishing so exciting:
🔥 Spring Walleye Facts & Behavior
✅ Spawning Season 🌊
- Walleye spawn in early spring when water temperatures reach 40-50°F (4-10°C).
- They prefer gravel, sand, or rocky shorelines with good water flow to lay their eggs.
- Males arrive at the spawning sites first, while larger females move in later to lay thousands of eggs.
✅ Aggressive Feeding 🦐🐟
- Post-spawn, walleye bulk up fast, feeding aggressively to regain energy.
- They chase minnows, crayfish, and small perch, making jigs, crankbaits, and live bait top choices for anglers.
- Cooler water temps mean they stay closer to shore, making them more accessible for shore anglers.
✅ Best Places to Find Them 📍
- Rivers & Tributaries: Walleye migrate to moving water for spawning and stay in deeper holes afterward.
- Shallow Flats & Drop-offs: As the water warms, they transition to flats near deep water to ambush prey.
- Dams & Inlets: These areas provide consistent water flow and are a hotspot for walleye activity.
